1959-66 University of Vienna (Faculty of Philosophy –Botany and Zoology)

1966 PhD degree in Philosophy (Zoology-Entomology)

Scientific career

1967: appointed as Research Assistant in the Cancer Research Institute; University of Vienna

1967 prize winner of the Adolf Schärf prize

1974: prize winner of the „Karl Stosius prize”for the publication „Stimulation of DNA synthesis in rat liver by adrenalectomy”

1985-1988: appointed as Research Assistent in Immuno AG. Vienna, a leading company in development of vaccines (Today part of Baxter)

1988: back to Cancer Research Institute, University of Vienna.
Head of Institute, Prof. Wrba, introduced enzyme therapy in Austria and started cooperation with Mucos Germany, at that time the leading company in development of oral enzyme therapy worldwide. Begin to work with proteolytic enzymes as an additive therapy in cancer patients.

1995-2000 Collaboration with Prof. Sakalova (Bratislava): investigation of enzyme effect in patients with Multiple Myeloma (Publication of results).

1996-1999: cooperation with Prof. Lehman (Department of Pathology, School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland – use of enzymes in treatment of autoimmune diseases)

1998: new hypothesis on the way of action of proteolytic enzymes in humans.

1998-2000: with Dr. Eva Zavadova (MD Anderson Cancer Centre- Investigation of influence of enzymes on maturation of dendritic cells of ovarian cancer patients.)

2001- Important publication: Oral therapy with proteolytic enzymes decreases excessive TGF-beta levels in human blood (Cancer Chemother. pharmacol, 2001, 47(suppl), (S10-15)

2002: cancellation of the contract between the Institute of Cancer Research by Mucos Germany. Retired from the Institute.

2002 – up to now: Consultant to Marlyn, Phoenix AZ specialized to designing and organizing scientific projects with enzymes.

As a key to the successful career Dr. Desser always followed the principle of lifelong learning, which allows to integrate new insights into the own scientific work. Especially during her employment on the Cancer Research Institute it was always important for her to reflect the outcome of her investigations in clinical reality. Therefore the vicinity of the Institute to the University Clinics of Vienna was an important item for her work.
